Victims Who Developed Parkinson’s After Exposure To Paraquat—and the Families Who Suffer With Them—Can Finally Get Justice And Compensation

Due to the unreasonable risk of developing Parkinson’s disease from Paraquat exposure and other serious health risks:

  • At least 32 countries have entirely banned this herbicide;
  • This includes China, the world’s largest paraquat producer;
  • However, the use of the product in the United States has increased;
  • The US sprays 7 million pounds of paraquat over nearly 15 million acres of land.

Reports And Studies Show The Various Commercial Herbicides That Contain Paraquat

Paraquat, the controversial herbicide used for weed and grass control, is classified as a Restricted Use Pesticide with the Danger/Poison signal word because of its high acute toxicity to humans.

Research shows that paraquat’s oxidative stress mechanism may damage sensitive brain areas.

Unfortunately, a loss of function in these sensitive areas could become a cause of Parkinson’s disease as a consequence of paraquat exposure.

In addition to damaging certain brain areas, research has found that mitochondrial dysfunctions were also associated with oxidative stress in patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

Products that contain paraquat dichloride as an active ingredient include:

  • Blanco®
  • Devour®
  • Firestorm®
  • Gramoxone®
  • Hemquat®
  • Para-Shot 3.0®
  • Parazone®
  • Tota-col®

The active ingredient is also found in formulations with many other herbicides, including Simazine and Diquat dibromide.

Agri-based Occupations And The Connection Between Paraquat & Parkinson’s Disease

Much research using paraquat and mice has yielded some eye-opening new evidence that Paraquat can be hazardous to farmers and their families.

According to Parkinson’s News Today, “Paraquat has been linked to a higher Parkinson’s risk by its association with that disorder among agricultural workers exposed to this pesticide, and through studies showing that it can kill dopamine-producing neurons in mice.”

And what’s more, according to a U.S. News & World Reports article, the rate of Parkinson’s disease continues to rise–from 2.5 million people in 1990 to 6.1 million people by 2016.

American Scientist magazine quotes the following statistics:

  • A 2004 study showed the rates of Parkinson’s are two to four times higher in rural areas than in other parts of the state
  • A 1998 study revealed the risk of developing the disease was 170 times greater for agricultural workers than for non-agricultural
  • According to a 2017 study, rural areas of France have higher rates of Parkinson’s than urban areas

Other occupations besides farmers that are in grave danger of developing Parkinson’s after exposure to paraquat include:

  • Railroad workers
  • Orchard hands/workers
  • Agricultural workers
  • Golf course landscapers
  • Field workers with cotton
  • Transportation

Licensed paraquat applicators are the most at risk of exposure, but because the chemical is often sprayed on open fields, those who do not work directly with the herbicide may also be exposed to it.
